My job as your professional portrait photographer is to create amazing one-of-a-kind works of art that will hang on your walls and be treasured for a lifetime, and I’m excellent at what I do. Your job, however, is to capture the day-to-day milestones, from the first smile to the first time they take your keys and drive away. Even as a professional, I take snapshots of my own family, and I don’t know any others who don’t.
Since I can’t be with you every day, here are a few tips to take better snapshots of your kids:
1. Spend more time on their level! Get down on your knees and see what the world looks like from their point of view.
2. Think outside the box! If you’re taking a picture of them looking directly at the camera, get those eyes higher. So many times I see photos of kids with their eyes in the dead center. Boooooooring!
3. Anticipate! It’s no secret that from the time they start moving, little ones are F-A-S-T! By the time you press the button, the moment is often gone, right? No one knows your child better than you do, so pay attention and practice anticipating when they’re about to do something cute.
Want an example? Here’s one of my snapshots from a trip to the berry patch. Portrait material? Absolutely not, for a whole lot of technical reasons that I won’t bore you with. But you’d better believe this one is going in the baby book!
